Tom Morello Signed Strat

Posted on Sunday, May 8, 2011 in Electric, Lonn Friend's Celebrity Signed, Solid Body

Tom Morello signed this strat for Lonn Friend author of Sweet Demotion and Life On Planet Rock

“Let Freedom Ring” wrote Harvard Political Science Graduate and axe-slinging activist Tom Morello. Just below this phrase is his signature on this vintage quilted-maple top Fender Stratocaster. This guitar is such a perfect example of the quality of Japanese Fenders, in this author’s opinion it is an all-around better guitar than most made in the USA. This particular guitar also has some serious battle damage in the form of two gashes in the front. Cracks spider out from the craters through the thick finish like lightning in a pond. It looks and sounds brutal.

With included signed letter of authenticity, this guitar is more than an amazing artistic tool. It is a fitting canvas for any statement from one the most innovative guitarists of all time, Tom Morello. Truly unique noises, never before heard from a guitar, dominate every highly-influential track from such iconic bands as Rage Against the Machine and modern-day supergroup Audioslave, featuring former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell.

Glenn Frey signed strat

Glenn Frey, founding member of the Eagles, signed this ’89 Fender Stratocaster.

This guitar has been played, and has the characteristic metal weathering you would expect from a vintage instrument. This particular Fender has several special features. The knife-edge tremolo bridge was designed to float smoothly with graphite offset block saddles. The lower tone knob has a center-detent that it clicks into between 5 and 6.

Phil Collen of Def Leppard signed Les Paul

Phil Collen of Def Leppard signed this extremely fancy Les Paul for established celebrity signature collector Lonn Friend.

Exclusively available at Downtown Vintage Guitars, this fine guitar is on consignment for a limited time. Many other signed guitars we’ve seen were cheap crap without the signature. This is one of many signed guitars in our store that would be quite expensive, even before the signature. This is no exception. She’s featuring heavy quilting, fine inlays on the headstock, and no cover plate on the back.

'97 Bonnie Raitt Signature Strat

'97 Bonnie Raitt Signature Strat

This is the Bonnie Raitt Signature Model Fender Stratocaster. (not signed, signature model) This one was made in 1997 in the US. This is an ideal investment guitar for several reasons. First of all these were only made until 2000. Fender doesn’t endorse many artists, and Bonnie Raitt is still the only female with a signature Stratocaster in her honor. The body is made from light-weight solid alder, with a Vintage route, and Vintage style tuners. Very loud Texas pickups behind it’s white pearl pickguard. The bridge is a Vintage tremolo, with Fender-stamped saddles. The neck is a light rosewood with maple and a satin finish. The blue sunburst finish is pristine and appears new. This guitar shows very little use and it’s difficult to find it’s few small nicks, namely a small one on the edge of the end of the headstock. More photos and a video: (more…)

“Tux” was built by Jim Pontius, and it’s custom electronics scheme by Woz secretly gives you many more tones than you would initially expect.

This guitar, featuring all-brass hardware, employs the “Secret Fatness” mod by Woz giving you fat caramely gibson-like tones as well as single-coil thin action. It even has a push-pull pot that activate the “Bitch Boost” feature for 100x gain.

Identity Crisis Strat mod by Woz

Identity Crisis Strat mod by Woz

“Kennedy” built by Jim Pontius and Woz.

Jim put this body through an extensive relic process to mimic a K’s own 62 strat. The setup is similar, except it has an upside-down lefty neck fitted with Woz’s custom-made slick-tree string retainer.
This guitar also features Woz’s Identity Crisis Mod, giving it not only the standard Stratocaster range of tones, but that added gibson switch can take it into Gibson-esque high output caramel humbucker territory. It changes what the original pickup selector does, and in it’s third setting unlocks a whole palate of quacky out-of-phase settings. It can do tele twang, surf spank, lo-fi thin rhythm, or get added harmonics in this mode without the usual volume drop of traditional out-of-phase configurations. Also, no batteries. (more…)
